The union HRD ministry has now come up with a new initiative and as part of that, they have announced about having a common engineering entrance examination throughout the nation. And this would also include the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) along with other institutions such as NITs, IIITs, MHRDs etc. While the mentioned institutes have agreed to the condition, they have put a clause that weightage must be given to the marks scored in Class XII examination too. This is going to be implemented in the year 2013 onwards and while the idea looks revolutionary the reaction has been mixed from various sections of the society and academic circles. For starters, there are many who are welcoming this format since it will take off a huge burden from the students to prepare for a variety of entrance examinations. Due to this, the nexus between the commercial coaching centers and educational institutions can be wiped out. On the flip side, there are those who say that by bringing a common platform for all the entrance examinations, the autonomy and the brand value that the IITs have enjoyed so far will not be there. With the kind of criteria given, even a change in slight decimal point will lead to a wide drop in the result of the ranks. And this would also increase the weightage of those coaching classes which are expensive. What are your thoughts on this folks??
The Joint Entrance is being conducted in two phases - JEE-Main and JEE- Advanced. The initial screening will comprise of marks from JEE-main and the marks of the class XII. Of course, the calculation varies from board to board across various states and with focus on the marks of Class XII, the schools are focusing on improving the performance of the students without approaching the coaching centers.
