Tamil Nadu is facing a serious shortage of medical specialists, particularly surgeons. The situation may not improve as many postgraduate doctors are not willing to be trained to become specialists. Two years ago, the state government fought hard with the Centre to increase the number of super specialty seats in the state. Now it is heard that they have decided to deal with this issue. The Vascular Society of India had said that 80% of limb amputations could be avoided if there were specially trained surgeons. The ministry of education will soon be coming up with steps to increase the strength of surgeons and offer special incentives. |
