Story: A good tale gone bad the story is set on the backdrop of a village in Haryana and this has Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapur) who is a wealthy industrialist in that area. He is a major drunkard and loves the company of his bottle. He also has a daughter Bijlee (anushka) who is bubbly, stubborn and at the same time naïve and adorable. Harry is often helped in dealing with things by his man Friday Matru (Imran Khan). The story takes a turn when Bijlee’s engagement is done with Baadal (arya babbar), son of the powerful politician Chaudhari Devi (Shabana Azmi). What happens from there forms the rest of the story. |
Presentation: The director has come up with a different storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was not good enough. The dialogues were good but sometimes confusing, this was due to the dialect. The script was well written but the screenplay was bad. The background score was melodious and three songs were worth watching and hearing. Cinematography was decent. Editing was much needed in the first half. Costumes were rustic and suited the moods while the art department was natural. Imran Khan gave a dedicated performance and his efforts should be lauded. Anushka Sharma delivers with conviction and her energy levels are good. The real show stealer was Pankaj Kapoor who has proved that he still is the best in the business. Shabana Azmi was naturally impressive and Arya Babbar was a revelation. Others didn’t have much scope. |
Conclusion: Whenever a film from Vishal Bharadwaj comes many expect it to be filled with something different and hard hitting. It was the same in this but the major drawback happens to be the pace and styling. The first half of the film was extremely slow and one hour is literally wasted. The interval bang was neat but the second half also, barring few scenes the rest of the film didn’t have anything worthwhile. At the box office, the film might have strong openings but success is doubtful. Bharatstudent verdict : Good in parts, nice story but poor writing and slow pace |
