Pratibha Patil

Pratibha Devisingh Patil is the President of India & a member of Indian Congress. She is the first woman to hold this position. She won the presidential election held on 19 July 2007 defeating her nearest rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. She was sworn in as President of India on July 25, 2007 by succeeding Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi described her nomination as a "historic occasion" in India's 60th year of independence. Pratibha Patil a lawyer by training was the first woman Governor of Rajasthan (2004-2007). She fought for the upliftment of poor people and encouraged social activites to empower women & children.

She holds degree of M.A. (M.J. College, Jalgaon) and a Law Degree (Government Law College, Mumbai). During her college days, she excelled in table tennis, winning shields in inter-college tournaments.She was voted as 'College Queen' of Mooljee Jaitha (MJ) College in Jalgaon in 1962. Later same year, she won the Indian National Congress ticket to the Assembly election from Edlabad  constituency. She was married to Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat on July 7, 1965.

Pratibha Patil started her political career in 1962 at the age of 27 and represented several constituencies from Jalgaon District to the  Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (1962 to1985). She was the Deputy Chairperson, Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1988 and also served as the Chairperson, Rajya Sabha. During 1991-96 she was a Member of Parliament from Amravati.

2. Established Shram Sadhana Trust (Managing Trustee)
3. Establishment of Mahila Cooperative Bank at Jalgaon, Maharashtra
4. Cooperative Sugar Factory in Jalgaon District, Maharashtra (Chairperson)
5. Established Mahila Vikas Mahamandal, a Government owned Corporation
6. Welfare of Women - established a Hostel for working women in Mumbai and Delhi
7. Industrial Training School for Blind in Jalgaon

International activities :

1. Attended the International Council on Social Welfare conferences at Nairob & at Puerto Rico.
2. Member of the AICC(I)  delegation to Bulgaria in 1985
3. Member of Commonwealth Presiding Officers Conference in London in 1988
4. Led Indian delegation to the Conference on the ‘Status of Women’ at  Austria in 1995
5. Delegate at the World Women’s Conference,  Beijing, China in September 1995
