Mira Nair is one of the most acclaimed Indian film director and producer based out of New York and she owns a production house by name Mirabai Films. She is basically a Malayali and Punjabi who was born in Rourkela, Orissa. She is the youngest among three children and hails from a middle class family. Her father was a civil servant and her mother was a social worker.

After her schooling, Mira did her graduation from the Delhi University. Later on, she moved to Harvard University on scholarship and did the higher education. Her passion towards movies brought her into entertainment industry. Her career began with documentaries and one among them was India Cabaret which spoke about the lives of strippers in Bombay nightclub.

Mira’s debut movie was ‘Salaam Bombay’ which won the Golden Camera award at Cannes festival. Her close associate is Sooni Taraporevala whom she met in Harvard. This was followed by Mississippi Masala in the year 1991 followed by The Perez Family in 1995 starring noted names of Hollywood. It was the film ‘Kama Sutra- A Tale Of Love’ which grabbed a lot of attention.
 
Mira has won a number of awards and notable among them are a National Film Award and other international film festival awards. She was also nominated at the prestigious Oscar Awards, BAFTA awards, Filmfare awards. Her biggest honour in India is the Padma Vibhushan, the third highest civilian award. Mira has a son Zohan and she is currently living with her husband Mahmood Mamdani who is a professor.
