During 1977 to 1979, Meira worked as High Comission of India in London. She served as a member at Indian Foreign Services and even served at Embassies in India, UK, Spain and Mauritius.
Meira Kumar was born to the former Deputy Prime Minister and a prominent leader, Babu Jagjivan Ram and freedom fighter, Indrani Devi in Patna. She married to Manjul Kumar, a Supreme Court Lawyer and have three children.
She joined politics in 1985, and was elected from Bijnor defeating powerful dalit leaders. Elected unopposed, she served as a member of 8th, 11th, and 12th Lok Sabha from Karol Bagh, Delhi. In 2009, she was briefly inducted as a member of the cabinet as Union Minister for Water Resources.
