| Description |
In sixth grade, I didn't have any 'career' goals. I wasn't planning on being a marine biologist or teacher or whatever my peers were thinking about. My plan at that age was to have a cabin off in the woods. Later on, I had all the Foxfire books that had been published at that time.
The older I get the more I find myself reverting back to that youthful desire.
I find increasingly oppressive the continuous dull roar of air and road traffic. My neighborhood used to 'die' after eight o'clock. You could sit outside and enjoy the quiet. You used to be able to hear the Angelus bells from the local Catholic parish. It has been years since I heard them. Now the noise is non-stop.
I look at the ugly buildings without character being thrown up to enforce the density desired by our dear leaders and can only think that the only people who will have a view of the sky will be those who can afford to pay for it. Entire blocks are being swallowed up for tacky tall boxes to contain people. Packed in like rats. The cheapness and ugliness we are willing to tolerate says a great deal about us.
As a child, I had a place under a tree i could retreat to. The branches had formed a hollow place where I could spread a blanket while creating a wall about me. I didn't like living in the city even then. As an adult, I find the city little more than a bleak cement block, a prison. The bars might be invisible, but they are there. What others find vibrant and exciting, I would feel .......$ |
