Story:
A tale with a message, the story begins with Subbu (kalki) who grows up in a very conservative and strict family. However, with growing time he realises that he is not a boy and goes through a severe emotional and mental turmoil. Finally, he realises his true identity and joins the transgender community. He changes his name to Kalki and as expected, she begins to face humiliation from the society. But Kalki is determined to prove a point and takes up dance. In no time, she becomes successful. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has come up with a thoughtful storyline and while the presentation was nice, the narrative was decent. The dialogues were well written, the script was okay but the screenplay was not that effective. Background score was nice and songs were moderate. Cinematography was fitting. Editing was required during critical situations. Costumes were natural while the art department was matching the situations and looked apt. Kalki has come up with a fitting performance given the character and scores. Swathi was there for the glamour quotient and does the needful. Girish Karnad was elegant and makes his presence felt. Vivin was versatile and does his bit as required. The others fill the screen to add value.

Conclusion:
Basically, the film is more of a docu-drama as it deals with the issues of transgenders and their rights. Given the way society reacts to them, the film is about their sensitivity and emotional quotient. While the first half goes about with the layering of the plot, the second half has its share of ups and downs albeit with a message to the audience. While the thought is noble, this is a movie for select audience and perhaps for the film festivals. At the box office, this may not be successful but can get critical acclaim.

Bharatstudent verdict : Message oriented, not for entertainment
