Ponnar Shankar Kollywood Movie Review
A period film, the story begins with Thamarai (kushboo), daughter of king Periyamalaikozhundhu (vijaykumar) whose marriage is fixed with Mandhiyappan (prakashraj), a neighbour king. However, Nellaiyankondan (jayaram), lover of Thamarai enters and takes her away. She is disowned by the royal family but Thamarai vows that her two sons will marry her brother Chinna Malaikozhundhu's (ponvannan) two daughters. The two sons grow up to be Ponnar, Sankar (prashant) who become brave warriors and are groomed by Mayavar (nasser), a village head. One day, they save the lives of sisters Muthayi (pooja), Pavalayi (divya) and they happen to be the daughter of Chinna Gounder. Their marriage is fixed and flashback is revealed. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.
Ponnar Shankar Tamil Cinema Review
The director has come up with an interesting storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was impressive. The dialogues were good, the script was written well and the screenplay was good but could have been better at few places. Background score was effective but only one song is good. Cinematography was breathtaking along with the locations. Editing was required during the second half. Costumes were natural and royal while the art department was matching the situations and looked rich. Prashanth has come up with an exceptional performance and bounces back with a bang. Pooja looks highly seductive while Divya looks sensuous. Kushboo was powerful, Prakashraj was impressive, Ponvannan was standard, Jayaram was brief, Nasser was natural, the others did their bit as required and added value.

Ponnar Shankar Filem Review
The story has been written by chief minister Karunanidhi but it was brought onto the screen neatly by the makers. While the first half excels with the grandeur and royalty, the second half should have been focused a little in terms of its length and few unwanted sequences. Due to the extensive presence of many faces, some characters are left midway. Overall, this is a film which is a visual treat to the eyes and also strikes a chord with history and heritage lovers. In a way, this is a Desi version of the war epics of Hollywood. At the box office, the film will appeal all genres of audience and success looks strong.
Bharatstudent verdict: Watch it for visual grandeur and history!!
