Mirugam Kollywood Movie Review

A thought provoking film, the story is set in the backdrop of the 80s in a small village near Ramanathapuram. In the village lives Ayyanar  (Aadi) who is a country savage living by his own rules and beating the pulp out of anyone including his mother who tend to get into his wrong books. He is brash, ruthless and brutal to the core and has a major weakness for women. He does not hesitate to rape the women of the village, sleep with many sex workers and comes down heavily on anyone who opposes him. In such a situation enters Alagamma (Padmapriya) and Ayyanar is struck by the beauty of this woman. With the sole intention of having sex with Alagamma, he manages to find his way through and gets to marry her. Initially, Alagamma retaliates to Ayyanar's beastly moves but when she gets to know his past, she decides to transform him with her love and care but then it becomes too late. All the past activities of Ayyanar start hitting him and he approaches the path of the dying. The village discards him as an unworthy person and as he reaches the last stages of his life, it is only Alagamma who stands by his side.

Mirugam Tamil Cinema Review

Director Samy has come out with a very realistic presentation of each character and the essence of the film to convey a strong message about the awareness of AIDS is commendable. But then, the film takes a wrong turn in the later stages and is all about the deadly virus than any story or the character. Samy's handling of the script fell apart on that instant and lost its flavor. Full marks to the art department by bringing back the 80s environment, the music has been acceptable and the background score is impressive.  Aadi makes a very impressive debut as Ayyanar and his powerful expressions convey most of the messages and his nature, thanks to the director in a way. Padmapriya was equally competent and made a remarkable performance of her role. Kanja Karuppu as Aadi's friend managed his bit with few tickles. The remaining cast has been okay.

Mirugam Filem Review

A very subject oriented film which has brought out the message in a very strong way with the powerful enactments of the characters , it failed to take the lead and spoiled the momentum by focusing more on the issue which is already known than creating a touch to the story. The technical aspects of the film were good, while the first half had the punch to keep the audience expecting more, it is the second half which foiled the whole thing. A serious venture handled in a very intense manner but lacked the ingredients to involve the audience.

Bharatstudent verdict:

Can be watched but a very intense film, no fun intended!!
