Story:
A nostalgic tale, the story is about Sethumadhavan (Thilakan) who is an old man and has passed his prime many years ago. The time has come for him to count his days, Sethu has been living the life of a loner since his only son lives in the US with his family and Sethu's wife actually dies right at her childbirth. So now, he decides to relive his past by going back to the place where he spent his childhood and the adolescent age. He goes to the same bungalow which is now being owned by someone else and is being taken care of by one Kashi (Jagadeesh). The condition of the bungalow is in a worse shape but Sethu does not mind as he tends to go back to his good old days. That also brings to his mind the memories of the pretty girl Paru (Shilpa Bala) with whom he had shared a very nurturing romantic relationship until life took its own course and they had to part ways. However, much to Sethu's surprise, he tends to meet one Devayani (Shilpa Bala again) who seems like an exact replica of Paru. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has come up with a strikingly intense emotional subject and though the presentation has been perfect, the narrative got a bit artificial at times. The dialogues were well written, the script was alright though it had flaws, the screenplay was well executed. It is the music that requires full credit with some haunting tunes and cherishable songs while the cinematography was competent by covering the past and the present in good frames. Editing could have been a lot better during the second half. Locations were apt, costumes were perfect. The pace of the movie was quite mild. Thilakan has come up with a mild but a magnificent performance and he has shown his mettle in a big way. Shilpa Bala was beautiful and sensuous in her own manner but then she needs to be careful in few scenes. Jagadeesh was effective, Rejith Menon was apt, Meera Vasudev and Y S Vinu did justice to their bit and Chali Pala had a major share of performance while Krishnachandran was not upto the mark. The others need no mention here.

Conclusion:
The film tends to remind folks of movies like 'Mausam' given the misty thoughts but then it had its own presence. While the first half goes about in the desolate life of the protagonist, it is the second half that picks up with some plot and the film could have been a lot better if the maker made the content of emotion and romance to a balanced level. It was far too idealistic which the audience today may find hard to believe. However, the film has got a very class quality and it is not like the usual masala potboilers. It can be watched once for sure and it will have its place at the box office.
Bharatstudent Verdict: A watchable treat with romantic overdose, could have been better. |
