Story: This is a film with four stories in it. I AM- Omar This
is about Omar (arjun) who is an aspiring model/actor and is ready to do
anything for a break. He meets up with a noted personality (rahul) and
is asked for a sexual favor for the break. Meanwhile, there is a cop
(abhimanyu singh) who is on the prowl and gets a whiff of what is
happening. How the paths of the three cross each other and where it goes
from there forms the rest of the story. I AM- Abhimanyu This
is about Abhimanyu (sanjay) who becomes a director but has a dark
childhood. He was sexually abused by his step father (anurag) and this
disturbs him great deal. However, the step father passes away and Abhi
decides to reveal about this to his mother (shernaz). It also reveals
how the boy had to offer himself for getting his materialistic desires. I AM - Afia Afia
(nandita) is keen on becoming a mother and doesn't get much support
from her husband (manav). She decides to go for artificial insemination
and gets help from a donor (purab). While Afia is keen on meeting him,
he is hesitant. Eventually, he agrees and what happens after that forms
the rest of the story.
I AM- Megha Megha (juhi) is a Kashmiri
pandit who returns to Kashmir after 20 years. She is haunted by her past
and is witness to the atrocities a minority community faces. This
affects her friendship with her good friend (manisha). However, what
Afia fails to realize that the pain she has been going through is
nothing different from what her friend is also going through. What
happens from there forms the rest of the story. |
Presentation: The
director has come up with interesting storylines and while the
presentation was alright, the narrative was neat. The dialogues were
effective, the script was written without many flaws and the screenplay
was moderate. Background score was effective but only one song is good.
Cinematography was appealing. Editing was decent. Costumes were natural
while the art department was matching the situations and looked rich. In
the first story, it was Arjun who scores while Abhimanyu makes his
presence felt. In the second, it is Anurag Kashyap who impresses, Sanjay
Suri was decent. Shernaz and Radhika were alright. In the third story,
it is Nandita all the way but Purab was competent to match her. Finally,
the chemistry between Juhi Chawla and Manisha Koirala impresses. |
Conclusion: The film is
a mix of four stories and each of them has its own genre. However, the
underlying theme is the insight into some dark realities of human life
which are not discussed and expressed. Though the intention is intense,
these are subjects which don't give a pleasant feel in terms of cinema
perspective. Therefore, the audience for this would be in a select mode.
Overall, the attempt to convey different experiences must be
appreciated. At the box office, the film is likely to be an average
fare. Bharatstudent verdict: Unconventional |
