Story: A gruesome tale, the story begins in post colonial India and Shahid Khan (jaideep) loots the money of the British but later on, he becomes an outcast and works at a colliery owned by Ramadhir Singh. The story takes a turn when a revolt of sorts emerges between Shahid Khan and Ramadhir Singh and that passes on to generations. In comes Sardar Khan (manoj), son of Shahid Khan who vows to become the most powerful in the Wasseypur area and restore the honour of his father. True to his word, he tends to stand up as one. What happens from there forms the rest of the story. |
Presentation: The director has come up with a realistic storyline and while the presentation was good, the narrative was great. The dialogues were raw and blunt, the script was tight but the screenplay went here and there few times. Background score was apt. Cinematography was top notch. Editing was good but required at few places. Costumes were rustic while the art department was filled with nativity. Manoj Bajpayee has come up with an award winning performance and he was intense. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was competent, Piyush Mishra was perfect, Jaideep Ahlawat did justice to his role, Huma was pretty, Reema Sen was impressive, Tigmanshu Dhulia was a surprise. The others contributed in their own way. |
Conclusion: The film is reportedly based on the coal mafia based at Wasseypur in the district of Bihar and more or less, it is based on actual events and true stories. While the first half goes about in a moderate way with the regular elements of violence and few hard hitting scenes, it is the second half where the actual plot picks up and it races through the climax. Overall, this is a film which is not for the weak hearted as it contains a lot of expletives and cuss language. At the box office, the film has it all to score a hit. Bharatstudent verdict: Intense and hard hitting, worth watching for serious audience |
