Gandhi My Father Bollywood Movie Review

GANDHI MY FATHER has a fascinating story with some surprise edges, as we get to see different side of Gandhi (Darshan Jariwala). The film tells the great man's story largely through the eyes of his wayward son, Harilal (Khanna) in a flashback manner. The film explores the different facets in the life of two great individuals and their constant struggle while trying to uphold their own principles. On one hand, we are explored to Gandhi's staunch value system where he is not ready to budge an inch when it comes to making a decision between truth and his son's silly mistakes. On the other hand, we are given an inkling into the life of his elder son Harilal, who constantly fights with his inner self in trying to be on his own but just couldn't hold onto everything he likes as he relentlessly persuaded by his father to follow him.

Theme and Story:
Debut director Feroz Abbas Khan adapts his hit play Mahatma v/s Gandhi for the screen with mixed results. Abbas was brilliant in showing both the good and not so good side of Gandhi with humanely touch. After watching this film, people will sympathize with Gandhi's neglect for his elder son in his pursuit for India's independence. At the same time Gandhi has been shown as a normal individual like anybody else who has committed some gross mistakes which otherwise could have saved the life of his own elder son. Credit should be given to Abbas who manages striking balance between the two individuals.

Gandhi My Father Hindi Cinema Review

Harilal's constant turmoil in trying to follow his own calling and many times artificially trying to satisfy his own father for the cause of freedom, so that he can have his own share of happiness catches the essence of his bewildered life. Harilal always aspire to become a barrister and have his own simple life minus the grandeur life of being the son of Gandhi. But he just couldn't escape the tag of being the son of great legend which follows him as shadow and turns him to debaucher, charlatan and religious convert, where he continuously tries to find the pure love he misses from his dear father.

One needs to have patience in watching GANDHI MY FATHER, as the movie slowly unfolds the truth frame by frame. Many times the movie just doesn't look like progressing and one has to have loads of patience in trying to be in the moment, which becomes difficult after certain time. The film suffers by comparison to Richard Attenborough's multi-Oscared Gandhi, striving unsuccessfully to ape its sweep and splendour. The film should have been made short in the second half to have the bigger impact, the movie looses it sheen at many places due to over-stretching.

Gandhi My Father Filem Review

Performances wise Darshan Jariwala could certainly give the glimpse of Gandhi on many occasions and Akshay will surely have many intellectual directors waiting to sign him. Very excellant performances, particularly from Shah and Chawla as the feuding men's wives, trying hard to keep things in perspective.

Bharatstudent Verdict: Must Watch Film.
