Dus Kahaniyaan Bollywood Movie Review

A series of episodes blended into one movie is a difficult attempt to entertain the audience but 'Dus Kahaniyaan' an ensemble of ten stories with ten different endings has come out to be a breath of fresh air in the monotonous masala entertainer industry. Following are the stories :

1. Rice Plate
Said to be an adaptation of 'Lunch Date',the movie has a Hindu woman (Shabana Azmi) and a Muslim man (Naseeruddin Shah) at a hotel and what is understood be a rice plate that belongs to the woman actually belongs to the man and how the drama between the two is captured forms the story. It is great to see both Naseer and Shabana come back after a long time and both of them have given stellar performances as usual.

2. Sex on the Beach
What starts a mere fantasy from a book for Dino Morea turns out to be a fairy tale reality on the beach when the woman of his fantasies comes in front of him in the form of Tareena. Both have a splendid time together but then things take a turn suddenly and lead to a horrifying tale of suspense.  Tareena is a feast to watch on the screen as she has revealer herself to the peak.

3. Love Dale
A simple train journey and a chance meeting with a stranger can well change the tune of your life. That's what happens to Neha Oberoi when she comes across this woman who wears only one earring. Curiously enough she picks up a word and this leads to a total transformation of her life and thinking. The depiction of  traits like destiny, fate hold the key role here and the cast of Aftab and Neha carried their roles with ease under the superb direction of debutante Jasmeet Dodhi.

 4.  Matrimony
A perfectly married happy couple of Mr & Mrs Sarin with just a hiccup of an ailing aunt, the chaste wife spends a day of the week with her aunt but then the reality lies in scouting whether the aunt really exists or is the wife actually meeting her. A story of trust and betrayal , the tale ends as a shocker. Mandira and Arbaaz have perfect screen chemistry, Sudhanshu has come out very well and director Sanjay Gupta has yet again proved that he is a master story teller.

Another classic from Sanjay Gupta,  Anita gets into a fight with her husband and sits next to a mystery man holding eleven red balloons. The journey comprises of another journey which goes around the man's past and lets out one of the most enlightening lessons to be learnt in our daily life. Nana is top class with Anita impressively well.

A slight move from a suspense thriller, this is an emotional package showing the mother-daughter relationship. The only child of a mother, a girl is about to get married and her doting mother would not stop at anything to see her girl smile but then an incident changes the tables forever and the ending is a tear jerker. Amrita Singh and Minisha have done well to justify. The subject has been well handled by Meghna Gulzar.

7. Strangers in the Night
A happy couple who have a strange clause of confessing a truth every anniversary and this time it is the wife's turn who narrates her experience with a stranger one night at an estranged railway station waiting room. Perception and reality are two different things and that's what you realize when you see the end. A brilliant story by Sanjay Gupta with some good performances by Neha Dhupia and Mahesh Manjrekar.

8. High on the Highway
A little disappointment with some really dark visuals with equally dark subject. Jimmy and Masumeh are two forlorn lovers who realize the taste of freedom and touch the carelessness of life and this is symbolized by the highway which depicts their togetherness and undeclared love. Not a very impressive story but captivatingly handled by director Hansal Mehta.

9. Zahir
A surprising discovery about a neighbor makes a writer go insane and a decision he takes gives this subject a much required twist , a bolt from the blue Manoj Bajpai was excellent, Dia was elegant and yet again Sanjay Gupta at his best in handling emotional subjects.

10.Rise and Fall
A story about two friends who are gangsters, how they come together , how they grow and an eventual betrayal of sorts. Sanju and Suniel play the protagonists who come out as very superficial characters lacking some realistic touch. Both the directors Sanjay and Hansal focused on the style than the story but the performances have been passable.

Sanjay Gupta has come out with this novel idea of ten stories ensemble and it must definitely be accepted that it stands class apart from the regular episode films. The coordination between various directors, the stories with their own destinations are an added bonus and given the fact that there is a volley of stars at one screen this comes out as a visual feast to all. Many subjects at one place again is another privilege for the audience.

Bharatstudent Verdict : A definite watcher for its creativity and the subtle combination of different recipes!!!
