Story: An engaging tale, the story is set on the backdrop of Mumbai and the rule of mafia is increasing. The home ministry decides to put an end to it and ropes in Mahadev (sanjay) to form a team of encounter specialists. This team is called Department. Mahadev brings in the suspended but tough and honest cop Shivnarayan (rana) along with few other officers. They start killing the mafia guys and this prompts DK (abhimanyu) and his girlfriend (madhu shalini) to break out from their gang and start a new gang. Meanwhile, Shivnarayan gets a chance to save the life of politician turned gangster Sarjerao Gaekwad (amitabh) and becomes his pet. But there comes a time when all have to choose their own path. What happens from there forms the rest of the story. |
Presentation: The director has come up with a gripping concept and though the presentation was revolutionary, the narrative was bad. The dialogues were well written, the script was decent and the screenplay good in parts. Background score was alright and two songs were good. Cinematography was variety and editing was required during the second half. Costumes were suiting the moods and art department was raw. Amitabh Bachchan is the showstealer of the movie with his mindblowing performance. Sanjay Dutt was okay. Rana was tough and fitted his role well. Abhimanyu Singh was good. Vijay Raaz was effective. Madhu Shalini was worth watching. Nathalia Kaur burned the screens. Lakshmi Manchu was upto the mark. The others didn’t have scope. |
Conclusion: Given the fact that it is coming from the camp of Ram Gopal Varma it is natural to expect high things. And it was good to an extent in the choice of the storyline and the new rogue methodology that was used but then it failed to deliver the impact which was built by the hype. While the first half takes off on a confusing note, things settle after a while and pick up. The second half also has a good momentum but the climax turned out to be rather abrupt and little stale. Overall, the film is a good watch to see the new techniques and performance of Big B. At the box office, this could be an average grosser. Bharatstudent verdict: Technically good but visually not |
