Arvind Kumar Kejriwal is an Indian social activist and great supporter of Gandhian Anna Hazare. He fights against corruption and for transparency in the Government. He is among the top contributors in the two mass movements of the 21st century in India. In 2006, he was awarded ‘Ramon Magsaysay Award’ for Emergent Leadership. He held India’s Right to Information movement, and empowered the poorest citizens to fight corruption. He is also a Saathi (fellow) of the Association for India's Development.
Arvind graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur in 1989. His father was an engineer and he spent most of his childhood living in small northern Indian towns like Sonepat, Mathura and Hissar.
Soon after his graduation, Arvind joined Tata Steel. After a while he quitted his job with Tata Steel and spent time working with Mother Teresa in Kolkata, the Ramakrishna Mission in the North-East India and Nehru Yuva Kendra.
In 1995, he wrote the Civil Services Examination and was allocated in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) where he worked as an Additional Commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi.
In January 2000, he founded ‘Parivartan’, a Delhi based citizens movement. In 2001, he campaigned a social movement for the Right to Information Act (RTI), later on the Indian Parliament passed the RTI in 2005. To motivate the youth he have now instituted an ‘RTI Award’ through his organization.
In December 2006, Kejriwal started the ‘Public Cause Research Foundation’ along with Manish Sisodia and Abhinandan Sekhri, which works for promoting better local self governance and RTI related campaigns. Kejriwal is an active member of India Against Corruption (IAC) participanting in the movement for the enactment of Jan Lokpal Bill. On August 16 2011, the Jan Lokpal key members of the IAC including Kejriwal were arrested for the indefinite hunger strike by Hazare.
