Rajinikanth an Indian Actor, Tamil Superstar, Influential Personality, and a Producer. He is best known for his stylized dialogues, mass popularity, dedication and honesty towards work that got him several prestigious awards. He is the highest paid Indian Actor who grossed Rs.26 crore for the blockbuster Sivaji (2007). His unique acting style is characterized by a trademark gesture: flipping a cigarette in the air and catching it in his mouth.
Early Life - Rajinikanth was born as Shivaji Rao Gaikwad in a Maharashtrian family, Bangalore. His father was Ramoji Rao Gaekwad and mother Jijabai. He was the youngest of four siblings and has two brothers and a sister. He attended the Government Model Primary School at Gavipuram, Bangalore where he had his elementary education in Kannada. The actor is married actor Y.G.Mahendran’s sister Latha Parthasarthy in 1981 in Tirupathi. She runs a school called The Ashram. They have two daughters Aishwarya and Soundarya.
Career - He made his debut as an actor in the Apoorva Raagangal (1975) a National Film Award winner. After the release of his film Bairavi in 1978, he was named as the Superstar of Tamil cinema. He has acted in about 101 movies in Tamil, 17 in Telugu, 11 in Kannada, 2 in Malayalam, one each in Bengali and English, and 24 in Hindi. His Bollywood debut was Andha Kanoon, later appeared in several Hindi films; such as Chaalbaaz, Jeet Hamaari, Asli Naqli, John Jani Janardhan, Meri Adaalat, Hum, Farishtay, and many more.
In 2000, he was awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’ for his contribution to Indian cinema. His highest grossing film at the box office is Endhiran (2010). As of 2011, Rajinikanth upcoming appearance in Rana, a period film to be produced by his daughter and directed by Ravikumar.
Honors - Rajnikanth was selected as the Indian Entertainer of the Year for 2007 by NDTV, and was honored with Raj Kapoor Award by Maharashtrian Government. He received the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award for Excellence in Indian Cinema at the 2010 ceremony of the Vijay Awards. He was also named as the most influential Indian of the year 2010 by Forbes India. In 2011, he was awarded the Entertainer of the Decade Award by NDTV by Indian Home Minister of Affairs P. Chidambaram.
