G.M. Rao the Entrepreneur and Chairman of GMR Group a leading infrastructure company in India. He is India's 14th richest person and was ranked 198th in the world's richest list by Forbes. He owns the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket team 'Delhi Daredevils.'
He was born on July 14, 1950 in Rajam, Andhra Pradesh. He has done Mechanical Engineering from Andhra University. For a while he worked for Public Works Department of AP. In 1978, he started his business career from a single jute mill in Rajam; later established GMR Business Empire into the energy and infrastructure sectors. In the interim he invested in ING Vysya Bank and in no time became its largest share holder. For his outstanding contribution towards ING Vysya Bank he was conferred with title the 'Chairman Emeritus' in 2006.
In 2007, the GMR group completed the project to build the new Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Group also won the bids for modernizing the Delhi International Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport and famed globally completing the projects from UK, Netherlands, Australia and Turkey.
The GMR Group is well diversified and ventured into Airports, Highways, Power, Sugar Plants, Brewing, Agri-business and Urban Infrastructure. It also acquires 50 % stake in InterGen, a leading power generation company based in Netherlands. Within a decade, G M Rao productively established three green field power plants; one each in the state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
G M Rao vision 'Building Entrepreneurial organizations that make a difference to society through Creation of Value'. To meet the future needs of marginalized people the group has set up the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation that is active in the areas of education, health and hygiene, community development and empowerment.
GMR Group Achievements:
1. In May 2000 he won the bid and completed the $200 million Hyderabad Airport project
2. In April 2009 he was linked with a 500 million takeover of English Premier League side Liverpool F.C
3. Won bid to modernize the Sabiha Gokcen International (SGA) airport at Istanbul
4. Set up the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation to raise rural society living standards
